Alan Davis Joins Electric Pictures as Director of Sales and Marketing

LAKE FOREST, California—Electric Pictures, a provider of telecine and film restoration services to independent producers, broadcasters, film libraries and government entities, has appointed industry veteran and former Digital Vision executive Alan Davis as Director of Sales and Marketing. Davis will oversee sales, marketing and public relations activities throughout the United States. He will focus on developing new markets for Electric Pictures, whose telecine services provide a proven and economical means for preserving and commercializing film assets.

Davis is co-founder and president of Digital Synergy, which provides sales and marketing services to manufacturers of technology used in television broadcast and post production. He previously served as vice president and general manager of Digital Vision.

PS Honours Sandra Cunningham with the Douglas James Dales Industry Builder Award

Ottawa – Rob Sim, President and CEO of the SIM Group of Companies, today announced that Sandra Cunningham, Founding Partner at Union Pictures and President of Strada Films in Toronto, is the recipient of the 2014 Douglas James Dales Industry Builder Award. The award was presented to Sandra at the annual PS Dinner on the Hill, held during the Canadian Media Production Association Prime Time Conference in Ottawa.

Motion Picture Sound Editors Presents 2014 Golden Reel Awards

HOLLYWOOD—The Motion Picture Sound Editors presented the 61st MPSE Golden Reel Awards at a black-tie ceremony held at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles last night. Golden Reel Awards recognizing outstanding achievement in sound editing were presented in 24 categories encompassing feature films, long-form and short-form television, animation, documentaries and other media. Star Wars creator George Lucas presented the annual MPSE Career Achievement Award to Randy Thom, Director of Sound Design at Skywalker Sound. The evening also featured a Special Tribute to sound pioneer Ray Dolby, introduced by MPSE Career Achievement winner Walter Murch.

MPSE president Frank Morrone gave the opening address. Supervising sound editor Glenn T. Morgan and casting director Jeremy Gordon presented the Verna Fields Award for Sound Editing in Student Films and the Ethel Crutcher Scholarship Award to students from England’s National Film and Television School. Other presenters included sound artists Mark Lanza, Joanie Diener, Kim Jimenez, Tom McCarthy and Erik Aadahl, as well as actors Navid Negahban, Julia Parker, Dayo Okeniyi and Callan McAuliffe, and producer/director Jon Chu.

Filmworkers Sinks Its Teeth into McDonald’s Olympics Campaign

DDB’s “Bite” campaign links athletes’ hunger for the Gold with consumers love for McDonald’s McNuggets.

CHICAGO— Filmworkers provided post services for a new Olympics-themed campaign from McDonald’s and DDB, Chicago, that has plenty of “bite.” The new spots connect the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi with the McDonald’s brand by showing medal-winning performances from past games, and consumers watching at home while enjoying McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets. Each spot ends with a shot juxtaposing the winning athlete, celebrating victory by biting a medal, with a consumer, who is also celebrating by biting a McNugget. U.S. snowboarder Louie Vito, ice hockey player Patrick Kane and speed skater Shani Davis are among those featured in the ads.

61st MPSE Golden Reel Presenters to Include George Lucas, Walter Murch and Navid Negahban

Studio City, California – Star Wars creator George Lucas and Academy Award-winning sound editor Walter Murch will be among the presenters at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ 61st MPSE Golden Reel Awards. Lucas will present the 2014 MPSE Career Achievement Award to Randy Thom, Director of Sound Design at Skywalker Sound.

Others presenters will include Homeland star Navid Negahban and Jon Chu, director and producer of the Step Up franchise and the Justin Bieber film Never Say Never. Also presenting are actors Julia Parker (Flight 93: The Flight that Fought Back, Battle Los Angeles), Dayo Okeniyi (The Hunger Games, Runner Runner) and Callan McAuliffe (The Great Gatsby, I Am Number Four).

Electric Pictures Helps Film Libraries Preserve Assets with Unique Transfer Service

61st MPSE Golden Reel Awards: George Lucas to Present MPSE Career Achievement Award to Randy Thom

Studio City, California – The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) today announces that George Lucas will serve as presenter of its 2014 MPSE Career Achievement Award honoring Randy Thom, Director of Sound Design at Skywalker Sound. The presentation will occur at the 61ST MPSE Golden Reel Awards ceremony held on February 16, 2014, at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites, Los Angeles, CA.

Lucas has a long-running connection with Thom, both in the latter’s role at Skywalker Sound, where he has worked for more than two decades, and in his capacity as a sound editor. One of Thom’s first movie credits was Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, where he served as sound effects recordist. Thom is a two-time Academy Award-winner (The Right Stuff, The Incredibles) and a 14-time Oscar nominee.

George Lucas
The creator of the Star Wars Saga and Indiana Jones series, Lucas is also the critically-acclaimed director of American Graffiti and THX 1138, as well as the producer of a myriad of independent films. In 1971, he formed Lucasfilm Ltd., a fully-integrated entertainment company whose global businesses include Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound, LucasArts, Lucas Licensing, Lucas Online, Lucasfilm Animation and Lucasfilm Singapore.

Studio City, California–The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) will include a special tribute to the late American inventor Ray Dolby, recognized around the world for developing groundbreaking audio technologies, during its 61st MPSE Golden Reel Awards ceremony, set for February 16th in Los Angeles. Dolby's pioneering work in noise reduction and surround sound led to the development of many state-of-the-art technologies used in the film, television and recording industries.
