“The Amazing Spider-Man 2™” Gets State-of-the-Art Sound as Filmmakers Mix in Dolby Atmos and Auro 11.1 by Barco

CULVER CITY, Calif. – Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that it is teaming with both Dolby Laboratories, Inc. and Barco to mix The Amazing Spider-Man 2™, the highly anticipated next chapter in the story of Peter Parker, in both the Auro 11.1 system and the Dolby® Atmos™ cinema sound system, to deliver a more natural and realistic soundtrack that moves sound around and above audiences. These innovative technologies open new possibilities to enhance storytelling through sound, giving the moviegoer a more immersive, exciting and compelling experience.  The picture will be released in theaters internationally beginning April 16, 2014, and domestically on May 2, 2014.

STORY Director John Komnenich Directs Award-Winning TV Series “A Piece of the Game”

New half hour series highlights the emotionally charged and phenomenally lucrative world of sports memorabilia.

America’s insatiable appetite for sports and sports memorabilia is the subject of a new, fast-paced, half-hour reality television series from producer Don DuPree, director John Komnenich and creative director Mike Waterkotte. Sponsored by Allstate, A Piece of the Game tells the stories of some of the greatest moments in the history of sports—and the collectables that capture the memories. The show recently debuted on Chicago station WGN and earned a local Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement for Sports Programs. The producers are planning a national rollout later this year.

Bling Digital to Host Panel on Post On Demand at Vancouver’s Digital Days Event

Vancouver—Emerging workflow technologies that are revolutionizing film and television post-production will be the focus of panel discussion hosted by SIM Digital’s Bling Digital unit as part of the 2nd Digital Days Conference and Expo in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Titled New World of Post is P.O.D. Technicolor – PostWorks New York Supports Numerous Films Screening at Sundance

NEW YORK— In a sign of its ongoing commitment to independent film, Technicolor-PostWorks, New York, provided post production services for eight films screening at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The facility delivered a variety of creative and technical services, ranging from editorial systems to color grading, for the films, which include two dramatic features, a comedy feature, three feature-length documentaries and two shorts.
Several of the films went through final post production processing at The Room, Technicolor-PostWorks’ boutique finishing facility, founded by master conforming editor Ben Murray. Technicolor-PostWorks has a long history of support for Sundance, including this year serving as an Official Technology Supplier.

Brennen Dicker Joins SIM Digital Atlanta to Lead Post Operations

Motion Picture Sound Editors Announce Complete Golden Reel Nominations

Los Angeles—January 17, 2014—The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) today announces nominees for the 61st MPSE Golden Reel Awards in all categories. Nominees represent the work of the world’s most talented sound artists and their contributions to the past year’s most outstanding feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment productions.

“This year’s Golden Reel nominees epitomize the craft of sound production at its best,” said MPSE president Frank Morrone. “We take great pride in recognizing the achievements of talented men and women who continue to inspire us with their imagination, resourceful and craft.” A complete list of nominees, with crew, will be available on the The 61st MPSE Golden Reel Awards website next week.

Sony Pictures Imageworks’ Jeremy Selan Receives Scientific and Technical Achievement Award for OpenColorIO from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences

Culver City, CA – Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI) is pleased to announce that Jeremy Selan, the facility’s Imaging Supervisor, will be honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) with a Scientific and Technical Achievement Award for his role in developing the open source color management framework OpenColorIO.
It will be the second Sci-Tech Award for Selan. Last year, he was co-recipient of an award (with SPI staff members Steve LaVietes and Brian Hall) for Katana, a computer graphics scene management and lighting software package. Sony Pictures Imageworks staff have won a total of five awards over the history of the Academy’s Scientific and Technical Achievement Awards.
AMPAS’s annual Scientific and Technical Achievement Awards presentation will be held Saturday, February 15 at The Beverly Hills Hotel.

Chris Fagot Joins 2G Digital as Vice President of Sales and Marketing

Hula Post Production Outfits Editorial Team for Indie Feature “Louder Than Words”

HOLLYWOOD— Hula Post Production provided editorial systems, facilities and support to editor Melissa Kent and her crew during the production of Louder Than Words, the new dramatic feature from Identity Films. Hula set up and maintained a remote editorial facility in Connecticut, where the film spent five weeks shooting, and later provided editorial facilities at its Tribeca West location in West Los Angeles.

Louder Than Words, which recently made its world premiere the 21st Annual Hamptons International Film Festival, stars David Duchovny, Hope Davis and Timothy Hutton, and is directed by Anthony Fabian. Based on a true story, it centers on a husband and wife who find solace, after the tragic death of their daughter, in building a world class children’s hospital. The film is produced by Anthony Mastromauro for Identity Films.


Technicolor – PostWorks New York Names Clark Henderson to Lead Burgeoning Film Unit

NEW YORK— Technicolor-PostWorks, New York, has appointed veteran post production executive Clark Henderson as Senior Vice President, Theatrical Services. Henderson, who will report to COO Rob DeMartin, will act as liaison to the facility’s studio and independent producer clients and oversee post production operations for theatrical motion pictures.
Henderson has worked with virtually every major movie studio and independent production company over the course of his career, primarily in key post production roles. He spent the past six years at Technicolor Creative Services, serving since 2010 as Vice President/Client Relations based in New York. As such, he collaborated with Technicolor-PostWorks on a number of feature film projects including Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Inside Llewyn Davis and Noah. Henderson managed several key accounts for Technicolor, including The Weinstein Company, and will retain those duties and relationships in his new role with Technicolor-PostWorks.

HOAX Films Executive Producer Alexis Nelson to Speak at ACM SIGGRAPH Careers Event

Editing Company Friendshop Launches in New York

Former Go Robot! editors Tim Wilson and Ben Suenaga join former Ogilvy executive producer Melissa Mapes in new boutique venture.
NEW YORK CITY—Editors Tim Wilson and Ben Suenaga have departed Go Robot!, New York, and opened a new editing company with partner and Managing Director/Executive Producer Melissa Mapes. Dubbed Friendshop!, the new venture will temporarily operate as “Artists in Residence” at Outpost Digital, New York, while permanent offices are undergoing construction.
Wilson and Suenaga had each been on staff at Go Robot! for more than a decade. Wilson’s credits include ad campaigns for HP, Exxon, UPS, Ikea and other top brands. Suenaga’s many credits include spots for IBM, Starbucks, AT&T and PowerAde. Mapes previously served as Executive Producer and Senior Partner at Ogilvy, New York, where she led American Express, UPS, IKEA and Stoli among others.

“We were always crazy about the idea of building our own culture, one where collaboration and a sense of community are key,” said Wilson. “We’ve had the pleasure of working with some of the most talented and creative minds in the industry, and we’re excited to continue doing great work with them in this kind of environment.”
Suenaga added, “Friendshop! began long ago as a typo. Then it turned into an inside joke, then a tumblr and now—finally—it’s a real company.”
For her part, Mapes said that her 15 years at Ogilvy “prepared me in a great way to handle the wily ways of the creative and demanding world of advertising.”
“Ben, Tim and I have essentially grown up together in this business, and have been relying on each other as partners since our careers began,” she added. “ We’re excited to officially join forces and take on the many opportunities and challenges ahead.”
