Sherpas Cinemas “Into the Mind” Brings World Tour to Los Angeles

Latest feature from Canadian filmmakers, repped in the U.S. by Accomplice Media, is also scheduled to screen in Tokyo, Paris, Munich, Moscow, Vienna and other cities around the globe.

Los Angeles— Into the Mind, Sherpas Cinema’s new film about an anonymous skier’s attempt to climb and ski the ultimate mountain, will screen twice in the Los Angeles area next week as part of its current World Tour. Screenings of the film, which won the International Freeski Film Festival (iF3) Award as Film-the-Year, are slated for November 8 at the Vista Theatre in Los Angeles and November 13th at the Old Town Music Hall in El Segundo. The follow up to All.I.Can, Sherpas Cinema’s acclaimed 2011 film, Into the Mind combines stunning cinematography and groundbreaking storytelling techniques in an epic adventure about risk, perseverance and the quest for achievement.

HOAX Films Executive Producer Alexis Nelson to Speak at The World Animation and VFX Summit

Event set for November 5th in Marina del Rey, California.
Culver City, Calif.—Alexis Nelson, Co-Founder and Executive Producer of HOAX Films will participate in a panel discussion entitled Creating CG and VFX in Commercials as part of The World Animation and VFX Summit on November 5th.  Nelson will discuss HOAX Films’ recent work for Guess, NBC, Chevrolet, Absolut and other brands, and how a boutique visual effects house can thrive in the fiercely competitive world of advertising.
The panel discussion will be chaired by freelancer writer Thomas J. McLean. Other panelists will include Robert Sethi, Creative Director of The Mill, and Ludovico Marenzi, Managing Director of Mackevision. The panel is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m., November 5th, at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey, California.

MTI Film Boosts Production Staff for Television Post

Producers Antoinette Perez and Lawrence Epstein will oversee post work for more than a half dozen scripted television series.

HOLLYWOOD— Ramping up for a busy television season, MTI Film has added veteran producers Antoinette Perez and Lawrence Epstein to its post-production services division. Perez arrives from Pixomondo where she produced visual effects for such films as Oblivion and Red Tails. Epstein’s appointment is a promotion. He served for the past three years as MTI Film’s Night Operations Manager.

Filmworkers Helps State Farm Spokesman Aaron Rodgers Find a Seat in “Grill Class”

Post house provides color, editorial and VFX services for the latest in a series of spots out of DDB.

CHICAGO—Filmworkers provided post-production services with a distinctive Windy City accent for the latest spot from State Farm. Conceived by Chicago agency DDB, the spot features State Farm spokesman Aaron Rodgers, who finds himself wedged uncomfortably between a pair of Bears fans during an airline flight. The two fans are played by George Wendt and Robert Smigel in a reprise of their roles as “Bob” and “Carl” from a classic Saturday Night Live skit. Bob and Carl poke fun at Rodgers as the “discount double check guy” while tending a pair of tray table grills filled with sizzling brats.

Colorflow Adds Its Color Wizardry to Lost Star Wars-Related Short “Black Angel”

Newly-restored short that originally screened with “The Empire Strikes Back” premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival.

Berkeley, CA— Colorflow recently applied its color grading expertise to a newly-restored version of Black Angel¸ a fantasy-themed short film with a Star Wars connection that was believed lost for more than 30 years.

Black Angel was written and directed by Roger Christian, who won an Academy Award for his work as art director on the first Star Wars movie, and it originally screened alongside The Empire Strikes Back in Australian and European movie theaters in 1980.

SIM Digital Reinvents the Rental House Model to Serve a Production Industry Where Data is King

Los Angeles—John DeBoer, chief operating officer of Toronto-headquartered SIM Digital, sensed that the rental house business model needed to evolve back in 2009. At that time, SIM had been operating for nearly three decades and become one of the top rental houses in North America for cameras, editing systems and a variety of other gear for television, commercials and broadcast production. The rental business was going through a radical shift as productions were abandoning 35mm film in favor of digital capture. The shift involved more than switching cameras, the entire production and post-production workflow—one that had been in place for decades—needed to be reinvented in order to accommodate imagery in the form of data files rather than celluloid.

Original Explores the Human Side of Tobacco Addiction in Project Quit

The new initiative from Arizona Smokers’ Helpline and RIESTER follows four tobacco users for 30 days as they try to kick the habit.

LOS ANGELES—Tobacco addiction is notoriously difficult to kick.  Just how difficult, and the impact quitting has on individual lives, is the subject of Project Quit, a newly-launched public-service initiative developed by RIESTER for the Arizona Smokers’ Helpline.

RIESTER asked Los Angeles production company Original and director Geoffrey Madeja to follow four people who have taken a vow to quit tobacco. Through a mix of slice-of-life scenes and interviews, the four tobacco users, along with their friends and loved ones, talk about the difficulty of quitting, how they got started with tobacco, the effects it has had on their relationships, and how quitting is complicated by other factors including health problems, employment and money issues. What emerges are complex stories of struggle, determination and hope.

TORRANCE, Calif.—On October 19th, Doffin Investments will host Investing Like a Robot, an open house and free art exhibition featuring the work of some of the South Bay’s most talented visual artists. The latest in Doffin’s ongoing series of free art events, Investing Like a Robot promises to be the best yet including dozens of works by acclaimed artists Frank Minuto, Parker Dunbar, Gilbert Iniquez and Carlos Hernandez.

The title of the event derives from Frank Minuto’s playful Toy Robots series originally exhibited at Terminal 1 at LAX in 2010. Minuto’s work has been the subject of one-person shows across the United States and is included in the permanent collections of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka Museum in Russia and the Museum of Art in Nagasaki, Japan. Minuto, whose studio is in San Pedro, has also shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Latin American Art.

HOAX Films Delivers VFX for Britney Spears’ “Work Bitch”

Culver City, Calif.—Award-winning digital production studio HOAX Films provided visual effects services for Work Bitch, the new Britney Spears video, directed by Ben Mor. The song is the first single from Spears’ upcoming eighth studio album which drops December 1st.
Work Bitch marks the second collaboration between the visionary Mor and HOAX Films. The design studio previously delivered visual effects for Part of Me, directed by Mor for Katy Perry in 2012.  For Work Bitch, HOAX Films completed sky replacements shots, set extensions and cleanup.

FilmLab will employ CORTEX::Dailies to service feature and television productions working in Hungary and throughout Europe. The system is capable of processing camera data from all popular digital cinema cameras, including cameras made by Sony, ARRI, Canon and RED,  and creating media required for editorial, review and back-up, with or without applied color grading.
