MTI Film to Demo Sony Workflows at Cine Gear

HOLLYWOOD—At the upcoming Cine Gear Expo in Los Angeles, MTI Film will demonstrate end-to-end workflow solutions, based on its groundbreaking Cortex product line, for the latest generation of Sony digital camera systems. The demos will be conducted at the Sony booth (S218) and will feature MTI Film’s flagship product, Cortex::Control Dailies and its use for on-set review, dailies processing, media archiving and deliverables production. The 2013 Cine Gear Expo is set for May 31st through June 1st at The Studios at Paramount in Los Angeles.

Accomplice Signs Director Rick Knief

Los Angeles—Director Rick Knief has joined Accomplice Media for exclusive representation in commercials. A former award-winning creative director, Knief has directed campaigns for such brands as the Wall Street Journal, Century 21, IBM, Time-Warner and American Express, producing work that spans a range of genres from comedy to visual storytelling to real-people documentary. Last year, he earned critical and popular acclaim for a music video for indie singer/songwriter Joseph Arthur that was shot with a rig equipped with nine iPhones.

Gavin Barclay Joins Bling Digital

Former “Suits”/”Covert Affairs” Co-Producer to oversee expansion of on-set/near-set post-production services.

Los Angeles—SIM Digital has appointed veteran television producer Gavin Barclay as Vice President of its Bling Digital unit. Barclay, whose television credits include such shows as Suits, Covert Affairs, Nip/Tuck and Knight Rider, will oversee the expansion of Bling’s on-set and near-set post-production services, which include solutions for dailies processing, color grading, offline Avid rentals, online editorial and other operations. He will have both operational and client services responsibilities.

Ed Rivero, managing director of Los Angeles production company Cortez Brothers, has worked in advertising for more than 20 years has witnessed many changes in the industry, including the way companies like his market their services. When Rivero was getting started in his career, production companies recorded show reels for their directors onto ¾-inch videotapes. They were time-consuming to prepare, awkward to manage and expensive to ship. “We would edit them once a quarter,” he recalls. “They were our calling cards.”

Technicolor – PostWorks’ Tim Stipan Applies the Finishing Touch to Indie Drama “Disconnect”

NEW YORK—Disconnect, the new drama from LD Entertainment and director Henry Alex Rubin, weaves three loosely related narrative lines, each of which relates to the internet and the way it is affecting human relationships. The protagonists of its three plot lines include a TV news reporter investigating porn chat sites, a lawyer whose 15-year-old son is victimized by his skater buddies, and an interracial couple who turn to on-line grief consoling to cope with the death of their baby.

Post-production was completed at Technicolor – PostWorks in New York, where the work ran the gamut from dailies processing through DI Colorist Tim Stipan (Moonrise Kingdom, Black Swan) applied the final grade, working alongside Rubin and cinematographer Ken Seng.

“Lawrence of Arabia,” Digitally Restored with Help from MTI Film, Wins FOCAL International Award



HOLLYWOOD—The new 50th Anniversary Directors Cut of Lawrence of Arabia, which underwent digital film restoration processing at MTI Film,  was awarded Best Archive Restoration/Preservation Title at the tenth FOCAL International Awards in London. The film was restored in 4K under the direction of Sony Pictures Entertainment EVP of Asset Management, Film Restoration and Digital Mastering Grover Crisp.

David Lean’s 1962 masterpiece, Lawrence of Arabia is widely considered one of the greatest films of all time. Prior to its 50th anniversary release by Sony Pictures last year, the film went through a meticulous restoration and re-mastering in 4K.

CULVERY CITY, CA  – The newly-restored, 50th Anniversary Directors Cut of David Lean’s 1962 masterpiece Lawrence of Arabia took home the award for “Best Archive Restoration/Preservation Title” at the tenth FOCAL International Awards held May 2nd in London. The 4K restoration of the film was completed last year by Sony Pictures Entertainment under the direction of Grover Crisp, EVP of Asset Management, Film Restoration and Digital Mastering for SPE. Crisp also received a special, individual award for “Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Film Restoration and Preservation.”

Hollywood Center Studios Hosts Stock Shoot for GreenScreen Animals

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

HOLLYWOOD—Things were wild on Stage 12 at Hollywood Center Studios recently as a pair of gray wolves, two grizzly bears, a leopard, a lion, an African elephant and other exotic animals stopped by for their close-ups. The occasion was a 3-day shoot conducted by GreenScreen Animals, a Santa Monica supplier of specialty stock footage, that was seeking to add to its one-of-a-kind collection of more than 3000 stock images of wild animals.

There is a huge demand for stock images of wild creatures, especially hard to come by green screen shots, that are ideal for special effects purposes. GreenScreen Animals’ animal content has been used in everything from films (We Bought a Zoo) to commercials (FreeCreditReport.com) to late night TV (The Tonight Show with Jay Leno).

SIM Digital Acquires Canada’s PS Production Services

MTI Film Adds XAVC Support to Cortex

HOLLYWOOD—MTI Film today announces that its Cortex product line now includes full support for Sony’s recently-developed XAVC recording format. XAVC is included in Cortex::Control Dailies DP, Pro, Studio and Ultimate editions and in the Stream, Pro, Studio and Ultimate editions of Cortex::Convey. Support for Sony RAW and SR Master formats is already included in all Cortex editions including the FREE edition of Cortex::Control Dailies.

Sony’s XAVC format, which is H.264 based, is a dedicated 4K format developed to foster 4K production in areas beyond feature films, including television, documentaries and commercials. The format provides a cost efficient digital imaging eco-system for 4K and high frame rate content. Sony’s F55 and F5 cameras include the XAVC codec.

Technicolor – PostWorks New York Prepares “Bluebird”, “Coach” for Tribeca Premieres

Sam Daley grades indie drama for first-time helmer Lance Edmands; plus Best Documentary Short winner “Coach.”               

NEW YORK— Technicolor-PostWorks New York recently provided a package of post-production services for two films that made their world premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival:  Bluebird, an independent feature from first-time director Lance Edmands that was featured in the festival’s World Narrative slate, and Bess Kargman’s Coach, which took top honors as Best Documentary Short.

A drama set in a small Maine logging town, Bluebird stars Amy Morton, Margo Martindale, John Slattery (Mad Men), Louisa Krause, Adam Driver (Girls) and Emily Meade. The film was shot on 35mm film. During production, original camera negative was sent from the shooting location in rural Maine to The New York Lab for processing. Dailies and editorial media were then prepared at the Technicolor – PostWorks facility in the West Village. Services included dailies processing and final color grading.
