That book turns out to be a tome marked Property of T. Mosley a.k.a Textbook Timbo, which is also the name of Timbaland’s new studio album, his first in four years.

Hollywood— A new series of ads for Target were recently shot on minimalistic all-white sets at Hollywood Center Studios and yet rank among the “greenest” spots ever produced on the nearly 100-year-old lot. Virtually all of the sets, props, wardrobe, and discards (such as food waste from catering and craft services) were earmarked for reuse, recycling or composting. It’s estimated that nearly 4 tons of potential waste products were diverted from local landfills on these two projects due to the production’s adoption of eco-friendly production practices.

HOLLYWOOD—MTI Film recently completed an all-new digital restoration of North to Alaska, Twentieth Century Fox’s 1960 comedy starring John Wayne. Employing proprietary technology and image processing techniques, MTI Film scanned the original 35mm cut negative at 4K before putting the film through an intensive restoration process to address faded color, Newton rings, dirt, scratches and many other defects. MTI Film ultimately delivered fully restored 4K files to produce a new 35mm negative for long-term preservation, along with a 4K DCP Master and high definition masters in a variety of aspect ratios.

CHICAGO— Filmworkers helped Chicago agency DDB recapture the thrills experienced by visitors to Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair in a new ad campaign for The Field Museum.
The campaign promotes the Museum’s current exhibit marking the 120th anniversary of the Fair and featuring artifacts from the landmark event. One spot offers an over-the-shoulder view of a boy riding the Fair’s famous Ferris wheel (designed by engineer George Ferris) and looking out across the Exposition grounds. “See what he saw!” exhorts the voiceover, “The wonders of the 1893 World’s Fair.” A second spot shows a similar view of a woman gazing at a mammoth dynamo as an electrical arc causes her hair to stand on end.

His credits there included This Is the End, The Amazing Spider-Man, 21 Jump Street and Hotel Transylvania. Culver City, Calif. — Frank Capra’s 1934 comedy It Happened One Night was recently the subject of a lovingly painstaking 4K restoration by Sony Pictures Entertainment in advance of its release on Sony’s newly-launched Video Unlimited 4K download service. The first film to sweep the five top Oscars (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Best Adaptation), It Happened One Night is the first of five Capra classics slated for re-release in 4K over the next few years.

Los Angeles— Director Alberto Belli, whose viral videos “For Your Consideration” and “It’s Not Porn. It’s HBO.” have garnered international acclaim and millions of web views, has signed with Accomplice Media for exclusive representation in advertising. It’s the first commercial affiliation for the young director, who also won two Emmy Awards for short comedies he directed while a student at USC.
Accomplice Media Executive Producer Mel Gragido says that he became interested in working with Belli after watching It’s Not Porn. It’s HBO. on Facebook. In the video, several actors talk to family and friends about salacious movie roles they have participated in. CHICAGO—Filmworkers provided post-production services with a distinctive Windy City accent for the latest spot from State Farm. Conceived by Chicago agency DDB, the spot features State Farm spokesman Aaron Rodgers, who finds himself wedged uncomfortably between a pair of Bears fans during an airline flight. The two fans are played by George Wendt and Robert Smigel in a reprise of their roles as “Bob” and “Carl” from a classic Saturday Night Live skit. Bob and Carl poke fun at Rodgers as the “discount double check guy” while tending a pair of tray table grills filled with sizzling brats.

Los Angeles—John DeBoer, chief operating officer of Toronto-headquartered SIM Digital, sensed that the rental house business model needed to evolve back in 2009. At that time, SIM had been operating for nearly three decades and become one of the top rental houses in North America for cameras, editing systems and a variety of other gear for television, commercials and broadcast production. The rental business was going through a radical shift as productions were abandoning 35mm film in favor of digital capture. The shift involved more than switching cameras, the entire production and post-production workflow—one that had been in place for decades—needed to be reinvented in order to accommodate imagery in the form of data files rather than celluloid.
The new initiative from Arizona Smokers’ Helpline and RIESTER follows four tobacco users for 30 days as they try to kick the habit.
LOS ANGELES—Tobacco addiction is notoriously difficult to kick. Just how difficult, and the impact quitting has on individual lives, is the subject of Project Quit, a newly-launched public-service initiative developed by RIESTER for the Arizona Smokers’ Helpline.
RIESTER asked Los Angeles production company Original and director Geoffrey Madeja to follow four people who have taken a vow to quit tobacco. Through a mix of slice-of-life scenes and interviews, the four tobacco users, along with their friends and loved ones, talk about the difficulty of quitting, how they got started with tobacco, the effects it has had on their relationships, and how quitting is complicated by other factors including health problems, employment and money issues. TORRANCE, Calif.—On October 19th, Doffin Investments will host Investing Like a Robot, an open house and free art exhibition featuring the work of some of the South Bay’s most talented visual artists. The latest in Doffin’s ongoing series of free art events, Investing Like a Robot promises to be the best yet including dozens of works by acclaimed artists Frank Minuto, Parker Dunbar, Gilbert Iniquez and Carlos Hernandez.
The title of the event derives from Frank Minuto’s playful Toy Robots series originally exhibited at Terminal 1 at LAX in 2010. Minuto’s work has been the subject of one-person shows across the United States and is included in the permanent collections of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka Museum in Russia and the Museum of Art in Nagasaki, Japan. Minuto, whose studio is in San Pedro, has also shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Latin American Art.

Los Angeles— Tiago Guedes and Stjepan Klein, the European directing duo who work under the pseudonym John Doe, are bringing their smart, funny, occasionally provocative and always original style of storytelling to the United States. The pair, whose work includes both traditional and viral campaigns for such brands as Blaupunkt, KFC, Nestle’s, T-Mobile, Vodaphone and motorbike maker Bajaj, have signed with Los Angeles-based Accomplice Media for exclusive stateside representation.

Culver City, Calif.—Award-winning digital production studio HOAX Films provided visual effects services for Work Bitch, the new Britney Spears video, directed by Ben Mor. The song is the first single from Spears’ upcoming eighth studio album which drops December 1st.
Work Bitch marks the second collaboration between the visionary Mor and HOAX Films. The design studio previously delivered visual effects for Part of Me, directed by Mor for Katy Perry in 2012. For Work Bitch, HOAX Films completed sky replacements shots, set extensions and cleanup.

FilmLab will employ CORTEX::Dailies to service feature and television productions working in Hungary and throughout Europe. The system is capable of processing camera data from all popular digital cinema cameras, including cameras made by Sony, ARRI, Canon and RED, and creating media required for editorial, review and back-up, with or without applied color grading.

Culver City, Calif.—Post-production work for Sony Pictures Animation’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, the much anticipated sequel to the 2009 hit, was completed by Sony Pictures Digital Productions (SPDP) on the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City. SPDP talent oversaw sound editorial, sound mixing, color grading and editorial finishing for the animated movie, working alongside their counterparts from Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI) and Sony Pictures Animation , who created the film’s final animation. It’s the latest project to utilize an integrated workflow linking production, animation, visual effects and post production operations on the Sony lot. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 released nationwide in 2D and 3D on September 27th.

NEW YORK— Technicolor – PostWorks, New York, provided post-production services to five films that screened at this month’s Toronto International Film Festival. They included three narrative films, John Turturro’s Fading Gigolo, David Frankel’s One Chance, and Ned Benson’s The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Him and Her, as well as Alex Gibney’s documentary The Armstrong Lie, and The Weinstein Company’s concert film 12.12.12: The Concert for Sandy Relief.

HOLLYWOOD— Hula Post Production provided 3D editorial gear and space for Metallica: Through the Never, the new feature-length 3D concert film released worldwide this month by Picturehouse. Editor Joe Hutshing (Savages, Almost Famous) and his crew spent more than eight months at Hula’s facility in West Los Angeles cutting the film, which blends footage from Metallica concerts in Edmonton, Alberta and Vancouver, British Columbia, with a narrative story about a roadie on a surreal odyssey to recover a mysterious bag. Metallica: Through the Never will screen both in digital 3D cinemas and IMAX theaters.
